Local and state governments are specifying that owners and tenants catch and manage the runoff water coming from their site. This includes rain water from both buildings and hard stand areas on site. To store the storm water, the type of storage tank required will depend on the type of water running off. For example the amount of impurities and pollution in the runoff water may influence whether or not the water needs to be treated before it leaves site. If the site is a commercial or industrial building or a warehouse with hard stand areas there will generally be a need to either slow down or store this runoff water before entering the stormwater system.

Retention and detention tanks are the solution council regulations require to be installed to manage this water runoff.

Detention Tank

Detention tanks are designed to hold no water after the tank has been emptied following a storm event. The detention tank works by discharging water slowly into the storm water system at a set rate. These tanks act as a support system with the aim of overcoming capacity constraints in the stormwater drainage system.

Retention Tank

Retention tanks are designed to store water both for use after a storm event and for ongoing use around the factory, warehouse or yard. This water is idea for to be used around the site for operations within the factory or warehouse, for watering gardens or for washing vehicles or other onsite equipment. A Retention tank has the dual purpose of providing water storage and to allow the slow release of runoff water into the stormwater system. For example a 46,400 litre tank could hold 23,200 litres of water for ongoing use around the site operation with 23,200 litres of storage allowed to be available to be slowly released into stormwater drainage system. This tank is designed with fittings that facilitate both retention and detention applications.
